Grading and Progression
See link to Lancashire Aikikai/Hombu grading system https://www.lancashireaikikai.org/technical/grading.html
There are no coloured belts in traditional Aikido
Gradings start at 5th Kyu and progress to 1st Kyu, all with a white belt
(See note below on Interim Basic Skills Record)
Dan grades then start from 1st Dan (Shodan) and progress upwards from there
The black flowing over-trousers are known as Hakama and is a discretional award, which relates to teaching status rather than a specific grade. Wearing of Hakama tends to be awarded somewhere between 1st Kyu and 1st Dan
All Aikido Wexford grades up to 2nd Kyu will be awarded by Chris Wallace Sensei, your local instructor. 1st Kyu gradings will be administered by the LA Grading Review Group (GRG).
To progress to Dan Grade, it is a general requirement to attend courses with Mimuro Sensei when he visits the UK, so he can monitor progression
Dan Grades will generally be awarded by Mimuro Sensei
Basic Skills Record
The Lancashire Aikikai have aligned with the Hombu grading system and gradings will start at 5th Kyu. However, it is acknowledged that there is a big step from new starter to 5th Kyu.
Marple Aikido will be using an interim assessment, to monitor early progress, prior to the 5th Kyu grading.
